  3. I am an oncology nurse. Usually it’s the little things like abdominal pain, or difficulty swallowing that bring people into the hospital… after tests we find masses in places and thats how we find the cancer. Or the most obvious are lumps, but they don’t ALWAYS happen. Cancer can occur in anyone, and there are no tell-tale signs of cancer. It’s where the cancer is that determines symptoms. Chemo creates a whole different bunch of problems. Hope that helps…

  4. I don’t think there are symptoms of cancer. A person can be perfectly healthy and have cancer. Chemotherapy causes hairloss, weight loss, etc but not the actual cancer.

  5. Healthy young people rarely have symptoms until the cancer is very advanced.

Much also depends on the type of cancer and the location of the tumors. Older people are more aware that they may develop certain types of cancer (ie colon) so they are more alert in finding the cancer. But they too can be asymptomatic until the late stages.

Young people between the teenage years until about 40 are the most difficult to recognize that they have cancer. Unless the cancer is visible or is invading a bone or other organ than cancer in the young is missed even by the family doctor. Cancer is a deceptive and horrid disease.

8. In general, there are 7 warning signs of cancer:

    1. Any change in bladder or bowel habits.

    2. A lump or thickening in the breast or elsewhere.

    3. Unusual bleeding or discharge.

    4. A sore that doesn’t heal.

    5. Indigestion or difficulty swallowing.

    6. An obvious change in a wart or mole.

    7. Nagging cough or hoarseness.

I had a class in college where we had to memorize the 7 warning signs. However, my son was recently diagnosed with Leukemia (CML) and his warning signs were continual joint pain and fatigue, and eventually painful swelling in his feet and ankles before he was even suspicious of anything and went to the Dr to get checked. And, I don’t see those symptoms on the list, but you know your body best and you should be able to recognize if something is not right, however subtle the symptoms may be.
