  1. that depends on the type of cancer and of course your age. yearly mammograms are recommended for screening of breast cancer but not until age 40 when breast tissue is less dense. family history also important to let your doctor know what kinds of tests they can do for certain cancers. pap smears used to test for cervical cancer but know they test for HPV (the precursor for cervical cancer). talk to your doctor as there are many different cancers and some aren’t detectable until symptoms start to show and generally that’s at a late stage.

  2. this is a huge broad range question. it depends where cancer sets up house as to what symptoms it manifests, and in some cases, there are no symptoms for along time until it is too late. for women they should get an annual PAP smear of cervical cells and a mammogram and breast sonogram, and MRI is actually better that those two but HMOs are too cheap to do them, lots of small cancers go undetected by both mams and ultras….for men they should get PSA blood test to test for prostate cancer after the age of about 35, normally it used to be after the age of 50, but it is classed as a “monks disease” in chinese medicine as chi becomes stagnate in the area and leads to cancer when a lot of sitting is done. more men sit in jobs all day long so the area of the prostate does not get the exercise they once had in the ‘old’ days when they worked outside etc. men can also get a rectal ultrasound to see if anything is growing in the prostate gland.
lung cancer often has a little annoying cough that goes with it, and it produces no phlem, vocal chord/throat cancer first registers as a hoarse voice, uterine cancer has a strange kind of crampy feel to it with dizziness and nausea, kidney cancer also causes nausea, bone cancer has a very odd intense deep seated ache to it which is often helped by standing in cold water if it is in the leg bones, leukaemia comes with many symptoms from dark spots under the chin, raised red spots on teh body parts, dizziness, a cough, weakenss, being tired all the time….
blood tests and xrays are often the best bet targeted for whatever area one thinks may be affected….

  3. There are many different types of cancer and they can manifest themselves in many different ways. If you wait until you have unexplained weight loss, or other symptoms then you have long passed the “early detection” stage. If you suspect anything, go to your doctor. He will listen to your symptoms and decide the best course of testing. Certain cancers, like breast and testicular cancer can be watched for at home with a monthly self exam. Go on-line for the proper technique for either.
